2008 version
Why did that chicken cross the road?
BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road
because it was time for a change! The chicken wanted change!
JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed
the road because he recognized the need to engage in
cooperation and
dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.
HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I
personally helped that little chicken to cross the road.
This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure - right from Day One!
- that everychicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road.
But then, this really isn't about me.
GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the
chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the
chicken is on our side of the road, or not.
The chicken is either against us, or for us.
There is no middle ground here.
DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun?
COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you
can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.
BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that
chicken. What is your definition of chicken?
JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken
cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road
to cross, and
I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not
for it now, and will remain against it.
AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white?
We need some black chickens.
DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this
chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the
problem on this side of the road before it goes after
the problem on the other side of the road.
What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting
by not taking on his current problems before adding new problems.
OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is
having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad.
So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls,
which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he
can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.
NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road
because he's guilty! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.
PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.
DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he
cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road,
but why it crossed I've not been told.
ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone.
GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken
crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the
road, and that was good enough
.
BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a
few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for
the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a
serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its lifelong dream of
crossing the road.
ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.
JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the
world crossing roads together, in peace.
ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross
the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?
COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?

Mountain Running Summer - again?
As I start to increase my training now that spring is here I think about the races, the goals and the training needed to get prepped for the spring and summer season. I missed the deadline for Mt Washington and although have some other options, I need to think about realistically what is next for me? I love the training in the trails, on the dirt and up the mountains is just such a challenge and thrill to reach the top of every run, I am ready again to get going!
So.... 2 options...
The La Sportiva Mountain Running Series in NE is now the INOV8 Mountain Running Series and the same races are planned. The waive to get into 2010 Mt Washington is a great carrot and I won't let that happen to me again.... :(
But because I am a bit further south there is another trail series and a qualification for the Nipmuck Trail Marthon with 6 finishes of the "Grand Tree Trail Races" in CT and MA. These are put together by the Western MA Athletic Club.
Or a combination of both?

J5 SVC Kombi Race at Stratton - VARA featured!
Taking the day off from Devo coaching to go to Schuyler's second ski race at Stratton on Sunday was a true treat. We got our stuff together in the morning at the Lodge... Samantha and Schuyler went to breakfast for tea and pancakes (actually 2 helpings of pancakes - proclaiming - "they're free?" - I'll have more.... as Schuyler fueled himself for the day)! Steve and I packed the car and got the skis together and we trekked the 1/2 hour drive from Mount Snow over to Stratton. Once registered Schuyler suited up and headed out with the others. Afraid that he was too cold I offered his ski pants... no, not needed, but he did want a neck gator. I guess he knows better than his mom these days. After checking out the course the boys and girls all around 8-10 years old skied a few runs warming up and staying warm as the 74 registered girls and 70 registered boys from Bromley, Stratton, Willard, Magic and Mount Snow geared up with their coaches at the start at the top. Jay, Galen & Samantha with Steve were our coaches talking to the kids getting their minds and bodies warmed up to hit the course as fast as they could... I found my way to a spot mid course on the first run for some great photos of all the kids and got to chat with Dani's mom as she had volunteered to gate keep for the day (they were short of volunteers). The things we do for our children.... My feet got a little sore, but I was dressed warm enough. Taking a break for lunch - hanging out with Steve & Schuyler - eating fries and hot chocolate as the Vinnick boys brought over some cupcakes to share, it was a fast and furious mid day rest... The second run I focused on the MSSC kids and again from the top got some amazing shots!
Here is a link to the VARA sight with the photos - including my favorite of Schuyler!
Here is a link to my smug mug site with the Faves of the MSSC J5 kids
Will came in 2nd and Hannah came in 10th - a great showing for MSSC and the beginning of a great future for the race program too! Looking forward to seeing these kids in the gates again soon! Great job by all!

The Dos & Don'ts of Winter Running
The Do's and Dont's of Winter Running
1. Dress in layers. Use light weight wicking fibers as the layer closest to your body.
2. Do wear socks made of synthetic fibers that wick moisture away from your skin to help prevent blisters and athlete's foot.
3. Remember that your head may be responsible for about 40% of heat loss. Keep your head covered and wear gloves.
4. Apply skin protection using sun block and moisturizers as appropriate. UV exposure is not good in the winter as well as summer.
5. Don't forget to replace your fluids on long runs.
6. Warm up slowly and gently before your runs and especially before doing speed work.
7. Do wear sport specific running shoes. Running shoes do not have the lateral support needed for tennis. Help yourself avoid ankle sprains and other injuries and do fit your running shoes or other sports shoes with the type of sock you intend to wear them with. Do replace your running shoes often. Replace them at least every 350 - 450 miles run.
8. Don't run on ice. Beware of Black Ice on the pavement.
9. Be careful running in low light conditions both because of road traffic, uneven pavement and also be aware of increased balance problems.
10. Don't do speedwork in bone chilling cold. You are risking injury. Most wise runners use this season for maintenance runs.

Family
The holidays were so grand this year as we were able to visit and spend time with much of our family. The annual trip north to my family for Thanksgiving will now become a tradition as it was so much fun and felt so good to see everyone! It has been great on facebook to reconnect with family and friends and the face to face connection has been even better because we have stayed in touch!
Christmas Eve Eve with the Cook family will also be an annual event for us - although it is so hard during the week to put it all together I think we pulled it off and had a great time for the second year in a row - although we missed Grama / Mom Cook so much! Red wine in the kitchen tasting all kinds, all years and just laughing and sharing during this time of year is so special.
And our family, the kids, Oakley - Schuyler wasn't able to be with us on Christmas when Samantha & Stephen joined us for the brunch, so we had a special gathering at the Lodge our weekend retreat at Mount Snow to open his gifts with all of our family.
Here posted is all the group photos - to share with all of you - and to give thanks for family.
We love all of you.

Nancy E Photography featured on the VARA website!
It was a chilly day on Sunday and while juggling my responsibilities as Devo Coach to the 2 die hard skiers in my group, Gigi & Jenna - we skied a ton of runs and rode up Ego to see the start of the J4 race at 10 AM. As a commitment to the Mount Snow Ski Club I made time for taking photos at the races as much as possible - so this is the first of races on the mountain and I brought the girls to the finish line to watch the race a little while I snapped a few photos before break. The girls went in for break and I ventured back up to the race and continued to take photos at different vantage points on the course. First run was over and I finished the day with the girls... and then again returned to the course. It was great to see Harrison Ma our friend Alex Ma's son of Clifton Park, NY race and turns out my photos of him were the best of the day! I took more than 550 photos and really think I got some great shots.
Looking to share the photos - our friend & PSIA examiner Sue Kramer from Bromley was there with her athletes and I emailed the group, Vinnie, Steve Wolff and others. I went to the VARA site and connected with Toby to share and here is the group of best to be published. Very exciting to move forward in this area of action photography - my favorite.

"Proof"
Here is a photo taken of Samantha and Lucas when we were out in the foliage taking the family photos. Lucas' tshirt is a classic and the smiles on their faces show happiness, so this photo really says a lot. :)
Remembering that day when the family assembled with Josh, our "adopted" son, one of Stephen's best friends who lives with us about 1/3 of the time in Stephen's room. Josh has been so great with our family, helping out when needed with Oakley and Schuyler and really has fit into our family so well. Lucas is the other one to mention and thank for that day. I set up the tripod, framed the 2 areas for the photos and we all meandered our way in place as Lucas kept his hand on the button taking about 50 photos that day! I made a little video of the photo shoot as it was really fun to watch us all get into place and Schuyler squirm away. It was such a beautiful fall day!
So here is the tshirt sighting - a great self portrait of Sam & Lucas and my fave of the family photos as it includes Oakley!
Proof of happiness.
God wants us all to be happy.
You just need to find it within yourself and within those around you.

All my favorite recipes from Cooks.com
These days I have found myself cooking more and more, proving to be the best "Mrs. Cook" that Steve could ask for.... it is pretty fun discovering the kitchen, trying new recipes, but not letting it control my "day" in planning. The easiest thing I find to do is go go to google and search whatever food I am preparing. We keep it healthy and simple with pairings with broccoli, cauliflower, roasted asparagus, corn, and lately roasted sweet potato "fries".
Here are a few of our favorites:
Chicken Marsala
Chicken Parmesan
Pork Marsala
Marinated Beef Tips
I do slight variations depending on the ingredients we have in the cupboard so don't be afraid to try something new if you don't have the right stuff in hand!
Enjoy!

Freakonomics and charitable giving
Attending this webex from Merkle today called "Five Strategies for Successful Fundraising in a Challenging Economy" and jotted down some useful resources that I need to look into more later and decdied to share with all of you in the meantime. Interesting stuff looking into the future and current state of charitable giving.

One of Schuyler's favorite books was mentioned that i have pictured here. The book was so popular that it inspired the If You Give A series, which includes If You Give A Pig A Pancake, If You Give A Moose A Muffin, and If You Give A Cat A Cupcake.
If you give a mouse a cookie and he will ask for some milk:
Compare that to: If you give a donor power and they will ask for options, customization, greater insight and issue focused giving and ability to designate.
Ending thoughts....
Hope you enjoyed my notes!

Our "Deer" Family
Today for the second time this week I looked out the window in the middle of the day to find a family of 3 deer - 2 adult and one baby in the yard. The first day they were right in the middle of the lawn - Oakley was going nuts, but once I calmed him down and grabbed my camera I got some great photos. Today in the rain they returned and I took this other picture through the screen door. I love living in the woods and with the animals. It is one more thing that I am so thankful for in my life.
A little info on the white tail deer in Wikipedia - all I can think of is Bambi. :)

From Katherin:
"I am bound to praise the simple life, because I have lived it and found it good. When I depart from it, evil results follow. I love a small house, plain clothes, simple living. Many persons know the luxury of a skin bath - a plunge in the pool or the wave unhampered by clothing. That is the simple life - direct and immediate contact with things, life with the wrappings torn away - the fine house, the fine equipage, the expensive habits, all cut off. How free one feels, how good the elements taste, how close one gets to them, how they fit one's body and one's soul! To see the fire that warms you, or better yet, to cut the wood that feeds the fire that warms you; to see the spring where the water bubbles up that slakes your thirst, and to dip your pail into it; to see the beams that are the stay of your four walls, and the timbers that uphold the roof that shelters you; to be in direct and personal contact with the sources of your material life; to want no extras, no shields; to find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter; to find a quest of wild berries more satisfying that a gift of tropic fruit; to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest, or over a wild flower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life."
--John Burroughs

"The life unlived is not worth examining." - Can't find the attribution

"i know the human race is doing the best it can, but hells bells that's an explanation not an excuse." - don marquis as archie the cockroach
From Grace:
"For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone." ~ Audrey Hepburn
I relay for my dad, my grandma, my nana, Mr. Near, Dr. C., Ashley, and the hope that in the future, no daughter will have to hear her father say, "I have cancer." I spend my free time babysitting not just for the money, but because I love it. I talk to myself in the car. I tend to laugh at the worst possible moment. I think flannel shirts should come into style for someone other than farmers and "hicks." I think falling backwards off a 42-foot drop was one of the most trusting things I've ever had to do, but it was amazing. I truly think my parents are cool. I want to fall in love. I wear my heart on my sleeve and a cross around my neck. I wish on stars. I yell at myself when I screw up.
Yeah, that’s me. So take me as I am.
From Nadia:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
What kind of thing is so important that it can't wait for cake?

So we must love while these moments are still called today, take part in the pain of this passion play, stretching our youth as we must, until we are ashes to dust, until time makes history of us.

Nike Women's Marathon - Results & Photos
All in all I was happy with my time and rank for such a large marathon.. It was an early morning and a nice cool run (although so VERY long) through some early steep hills and smaller hills at the end. I was in the lead early - a little crazy (Probably started too fast - oh well) and then slowed at the end. My stomach felt funny - not sure if I fueled correctly - ended up in the port a john at about 21. So maybe not my best run capable - but a good one.
Lessons learned -
Don't start out too fast - think about pace early
Fuel is so important - drink & GU (I didn't have drink at all)
Mentally don't get wrapped up in stuff you can't change.
Have fun - always have fun! If you don't it isn't worth it.
Here's to Boston - my next big endeavor! :)

My letter after frustrated with the online system:
Hi Jodi -
Searching through the results this morning from yesterday's marathon and a bit disappointed with the timing system and what is reported online.
I was the ninth woman across the finish line for the full marathon with a time of 3:22:24. My number is not searchable in the results and the information I receive when I search by my name comes up as ranked 33? and 9th elite with the correct time. Why does my name not show in the overall results and why is my overall rank 33? My husband took photos of the females crossing the line before me and the announcer said congrats to another top ten finisher right before I crossed the line. When I searched at the tent when I completed the race they had me as 6th elite with the same time, and with my husband's photos and my recollection of women passing me after the 1/2 marathon split, I should have placed 9th.
Is it possible that since the 1/2 marathon clock was different that later on one of those participants was posted with full marathon time instead of their half marathon time, therefore squewing the results? By the way the first participant (Arien O'Connel) listed as F at a 2:55 is incorrect as the first female was definitely after 3 hours. Do you have any estimation when all of this will be "cleaned up"?
I know that there were mistakes in the bibs given out to half marathon participants and really think there are some issues with these results. I am very disappointed in this marathon as a whole especially after making a special trip from Massachusetts to participate, and this really makes it more disappointing than ever, since I lead for the first five miles and this result board has me so far down in the rankings and no where on the overall list and it took me 10 minutes to pull up the results using my name.
Please let me know who else I need to talk to in resolving this situation.

I was really happy with my results, but had a tough time kicking it in to be competitive throughout the race. Steve met me around the last 4 miles and wanted to give me a "boost" as I was not breathing or hurting like the others. I raced mostly alone with no chatting during the run. The course was amazing and the spectators and volunteers all very nice and friendly.
It was great to have Judy come up from Atlanta and she had a great time too!

Boston Marathon 2009 - third consecutive Boston for me!
I am so excited - I registered for the Boston Marathon this morning. Filling out the application it was really great to fill in the fact that this is my third consecutive Boston, I can see why people pride themselves on registering and completing this marathon every year. I guess I am addicted to it - running, racing, marathons in particular. Something about the thrill to complete them time and time again is a real notch in my belt so to speak, and to call myself a "marathoner" is a point of pride for me. Last year I didn't get as much training in for Boston as I did the year before, but now with a good routine for the winter at Mt. Snow and with Schuyler here in Belchertown, I think this year will be more successful for me in training. Looking to the future... actually this is a good psych up for this weekend's Nike Woman's marathon! I need to think about my goals and post them.

RFL BU Team building / Icebreaker photos / Hope Lodge visit
The first night of my trip to NHO in Atlanta this past week was a great team activity where we organized the group in cooking dinner and clean up crews. I was a part of the cooking crew and helped with salad and rolls... Here is a post about about the night on www.relayforlife.org our website for Relay! Jeff is a great part of the team and the webmaster - - and he posed MY photos to the story. Very fun!
Also at the recent Ruffle Bu meeting the team building exercise was really nice to be a part of... for a group opf people (24) to virtually work so well together has been great to experience.
FUN - Pre-Meeting Activity!!
As with each meeting we will plan to engage you in a little fun and frivolity while at the same time hoping to build a stronger, more cohesive Team. In order to do so - we need your help! Please complete the following Pre-Meeting activity by October 3rd for the following reasons:
A. The previously mentioned "purpose" of the activity
B. It will be FUN
C. It will be intertwined throughout the ENTIRE meeting and so WE will know if you chose NOT to participate.
here's what to do.....
1. Bring the following photos with you to the meeting OR EMAIL the photos to Toni by October 3rd
* The front door of your house/apt.
* Your favorite area in your house/apt.
* Your prized possession
* Your pet(s)
Activity at the meeting:
Each person gets a flip chart with their name
Everyone writes nice things about that person on the breaks
Everyone shares photos and people are asked to guess who they belong to and tape them to the flip chart.
Last part of the exercise is for the person to go up to their flip chart and talk about their photos that belong to them and give back / exchange those that don't.
This is where they talk about the photos.. very nice team building exercise I would recommend to others.
I am posting my photos here....

Applefest Half Marathon - this weekend!

This weekend is the Applefest half marathon in Hollis that I have heard about for many years. Mike Ward and the Gate City Striders put on this world class race and it has quickly sold out for the past few years, so I recommended it to Judy and signed up myself months ago!
I haven't been racing as much this summer after the mountain series, so I am very psyched for this weekend to be here. My training has been right on as I am also preparing for the Nike Woman's Marathon in October (19) in San Fran. I just made my flight arrangements and really can't wait for that trip!
First to focus on the race this weekend - 13.1 miles (pretty hilly - they give a course elevation and the middle of the race is the low point). Reminds me of Boston except exaggerated!
Here are my goals to follow suit from last season when I would look at one really aggressive goal, one realistic goal, and one goal that to beat even if I have to do it on one leg.
Here are my goals:
(with the caveat that I have not run this course before and haven't raced since July - anything is possible)
I love hills! My training and speedwork are paying off... who said hills slow you down? = 1:29:30
The no alcohol plan and nutrition plan really did pay off too - smooth and strong! = 1:32
OK - maybe I need to spend a little more time with speedwork to keep up the pace with this crazy hilly course. = 1:34

Pesto Lovers!
WE love basil - we love pesto - - see my favorite motz basil salad that we just added a little spice to by adding hard peppercorn salami and it is fabulous!
Here is the lasted best pesto recipe that we had last night at Family Dinner on Stebbins. Yum!
Saute the small pieces of chicken breast and make some penne (protein enriched Barilla brand for a great meal!) Serve with fresh baked french ciabatta bread with butter & fresh garlic.
Fresh Basil Pesto Recipe
INGREDIENTS
2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan-Reggiano or Romano cheese
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/3 cup pine nuts or walnuts
3 medium sized garlic cloves, minced
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Special equipment needed: A food processor (Check Amazon.com's sale on Cuisinart food processors.)
METHOD
1 Combine the basil in with the pine nuts, pulse a few times in a food processor. (If you are using walnuts instead of pine nuts and they are not already chopped, pulse them a few times first, before adding the basil.) Add the garlic, pulse a few times more.
2 Slowly add the olive oil in a constant stream while the food processor is on. Stop to scrape down the sides of the food processor with a rubber spatula. Add the grated cheese and pulse again until blended. Add a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Makes 1 cup.
