Nancy's collection of training tips

As I look at my many years of racing road races, triathlons, marathons, ironmans, mountain bike racing, road bike racing and most currently mountain running -- I thought it was time to compile a post of my tips from this blog and continue to add on to it for the benefit of other aspiring athletes.

My background is in physical education / exercise technology. I have spent many years coaching skiing, basketball, field hockey and lacrosse. In the early nineties at Killington I studied and became certified as an ACE personal trainer and worked with clients at a chiropractic office in Mendon, VT. A 3 year varsity girls basketball coach at Woodstock Union HS and now at Mount Snow coaching skiing in the Development Program, coaching young woman and inspiring them to be the best they can be and sharing my true love of sport really fuels me as an athlete. I hope that some of these tips resonate with you and you can find a morsel that gets you to that next goal, your next PR or finish line you strive for in the future.

Here is a link to my resume (last update 2008) -- I started racing back in college (1984) when my friend Glen who I rode bikes with asked me to swim a leg in this triathlon at Green Mountain College. The runner didn't show up and biking was my favorite of the 3 sports, so I competed solo the next year and was first female. I love to win - place high and compete against myself and others. I strive for a PR, personal best on a course and just hope for the best each run, ride or triathlon.

Below is a list of quick links to my favorite running tips on Mountain of Dreams

And finally a link to my favorite running quote collection where you can always find a little inspiration.

This one is my all time favorite:

“An athlete who tells you the training is always easy and always fun simply hasn't been there. Goals can be elusive which makes the difficult journey all the more rewarding.” -Alberto Salazar

US Amatuer Triathlon Rankings for 2007 - I rank 161 in the US and 25th for New England in age group!

Here is the list I searched on the USAT site - looking to see if I qualified for All American - which last year I was honorable mention. The closer your score is to 100, the higher your ranking. This is the unfiltered ranking.

National Ranking (40-44 age group) - #161 (not bad!)
161 NANCY PECK 44 76.73102 84.40412 (#159 if you take out the pros that were ranked)

New England ranking in the 40-44 age group = #25 (not bad at all!)

Pretty psyched with these results!

Here is the link to my last year's results - which my points ranking was 83 - so I moved up one notch! : ) 141 National, 10th in New England - 2006. I think you have to do at least 3 races to get ranked so we shall see what happens in 2008 - considering a new running focus. But very, very happy with the results. And I LOVE to see my name in "print" for my efforts!

The story:
Flying to Tampa on Thursday I was looking through the race guide (and my friend Stac can start laughing here...) and realized that OMG! the race is on Saturday and not Sunday. All my triathlons to date that I have raced in this year were on Sundays and not quite sure how I messed this one up, but I had the date in my calendar WRONG - - so I called Steve immediately to calm myself and start to prepare (even though it was so tight). Arranging the schedule with Kathy at the Curves conference to leave a little earlier from Orlando was done and now I managed to get to Tampa - - drive to Orlando - - work my shifts and meet some great people from Curves.

I drove to Clearwater after the night at the Rosen Shingle Creek resort (Which was truly an amazing golf resort) and after having put my bike together with my incredible mechanic husband - - drove at 8 AM to Clearwater. I arrived to the Expo area at the Harborview Convention Center. The race was so well organized, there were no long lines and lots of volunteers. They had you wait until there was one of the 12 volunteers sitting at the table to walk you through all the instructions and race numbers. Then to get weighed in case of dehydration they had a record. Not so much fun on the scale. : ) Check my timing chip and get my tshirt and time to shop! I got a sweatshirt that I absolutely love.... soft, fleecy, white Ironman style and a tech tshirt with the IM info on it.

Next to deal with my bike. My front tire was all worn out so I went to the bike place (tent) to have the guys put on my tire and straighten, tighten and adjust anything so that I could ride with a sound mind in the morning. LOVE my new tire, but I was looking around with "bike envy" at the thousands of dollars in bikes and wheels riding by and hanging on the rack. Although I am truly in love with my Italian road race bike - my Ciocci - - white and royal blue accents - - I have had since 1999. Crazy the money that is spent on these new bikes... some day. : )
My "sleeper" bars (as Steve calls them) were tightened and the guy laughed at the "jimmy rig" that I had for the bars after losing a screw. : )

Now off to place all my stuff in transition that was going to close at 5 pm. I packed my bags - blue for bike and red for run. They don't let you in the transition area after racking your bags - - Again I FINALLY found a parking space, met my personal volunteer guide (the volunteers were INCREDIBLE). It was carpeted all around where the bikes were held and she walked me through every step so I would be prepared (where were these volunteers all those times I got lost!).

Once I had all my stuff in place, knowing that I could get back in to my bike the next day to add my water bottles with fuel I was all set! Steve arrived that night - letting me sleep until he arrived around 1:30 am and then I awoke to find that they lost his luggage with the things I forgot (watch, water bottles for fuel and goggles). His mom was so great to pick him up and they went to Wal-Mart to get me goggles that worked great!

The race:
Woke up at 4 am - ate a bagel / egg and made my fuel for the ride. Got to Pier 60 and found a great parking space. We walked to the bike transition - - realized I forgot my timing chip and my bathing cap disappeared - - so I needed a new one. Steve went back got my chip and I found someone for a cap. WE went to the beach - prepped and I stared out to the ocean (dreading the swim as always). The swim felt very crowed and I was hit a few times. I felt straight at least and not too tired, but know that I struggle for time there with lack of (or no training to be honest, besides the races that I do) -- so on to the bike (which also had lack of training, but is my strength from the past - - sorry to sound like I am making excuses, but I am SO competative inside myself.). The bike was fun - I felt fast because I passed all those fast swimmers that can't bike as well. Although I did find some girls my pace in their late 30"s amd early 40's. One from Mexico, one from Victoria Canada and one from Italy. It was fun -- tight in spots that made me nervous because of drafting, but there really wasn't a choice and I kept far back as I could. The roads were flat and fast, just a few little inclines and a LOT of head wind. The last stretch was tough. There were 2 bottle drops and I pushed the liquids.

Once on the run - I was hungry and tired. : ) It was noon and I was ready for lunch. Oh well. GU for lunch. Hmmm, well they had bannanas and oranges - - so I fueled a bit and climbed the bridge over the water out onto the main area - around the housing development and back - 2 loops. I had to go the bathroom (woman stuff, belly issues) .... My second loop felt faster, but I really just maintained. I pushed to the finish and sprinted (Steve likes the effort put out at the end - - so I did my best) My time was 5:18 which I felt pretty good about - considering such a tough ocean swim and well - late season racing.... Yippee! It was about qualifying and being there. I was really happy with my results and wasn't sore like Chicago - so I was happy. Happy to be done.

We walked the pier area, saw the girl Kim that beat me in Big Lake at the half and also won her qualifying spot at Timberman. She was injured, but happy with her results. Nice girl, good to connect with her.

Found my overall results today after missing our flight out home this morning because of the offsite rental car location - - here one more night before heading home.

HAPPY - - just about 50% in my age group. Not too shabby - - 20 mph on the bike (cool) and my run wasn't so bad afterall. : )I love being Steve's "rock star" - - we played golf the next afternoon - - guess what? I can play golf too!

Next year - I will be better trained next year. : )

70.3 World Championship

Staying with my mother in law and Ray in Florida getting ready for the World Championships. The drive was a little crazy, but I got my bike looked at and then everything checked in and racked!

Here are some pics of the transition area - - red for run bag and blue for the blue bag... They have a tent for changing - - I don't need much for changing, but it was cool to see how organized they are here in Clearwater.

Steve flies out tonight and will be here in the morning to watch me race with his mom.... wish me luck!

More Timberman photos!

Commentary:
Cycling focus, eyes forward, pushing, remembering spin class, scraping the ground with the bottom of my shoes, standing up on the hills to push and to stretch my legs and back out, looking at the average speed and the miles rode just to keep it in perspective. Looking to the next pony tail, looking at the age on the calf muscle (do you believe they write your age on your leg - you have to be proud of your age in this sport!)... Bantering with a few riders, just to leave them behind (that felt really good).. even if not far behind me, still they were behind me (feeling a little competitive as usual).

Running focus: One foot in front of the other to start, shake off those biking legs... build up the turnover of my legs to go faster... think about pace, need to go faster, (no watch on this one to keep it together and motivate, that ALWAYS helps - getting my new watch from nike this week!). GET YOUR ASS IN GEAR! GET MOVING! cheers from my true love, my support, and always there (look to the sky for strength from above - he helps too) DIG DEEP - GET STRONG - (NO negative thoughts - keep positive). Even when your feet are screaming and your back has had it, you MUST think of something else. Talk to people, spectators, runners, ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN (ha ha ha ...). Those who know me, know i LOVE to talk. Even when it is a one way conversation, which in this sport is the norm.

Think FINISH LINE - - look at the mile markers tick on by. Can't wait for that ice cream and beer which is promised free at the finish (gotta love that!). Treat yourself to a quick dip in the water, ice cream and beer. : )

Then it is here - turn the corner, kick it in! Sprint to the finish - that is where the mobs are - and you have to love the cheers of the people when you smile and run hard at the finish. Very fun - very cool!

And what a race it was......

Timberman 70.3 - RESULTS are posted!

293 Overall out of 1493 that finished the 70.3 distance

Bib #1332 70.3 Nancy Peck
SWIM: Rank 740 Time: 40:01 Pace (per mile) 33:21
T1: 2:06
BIKE: Rank 452 Time: 2:51:41 19.6mph
T2: 1:50

Overall time: 5:15:36 Division place: 3/73 F40-44 Female rank 37/475

CLICK HERE for the overall results!

And just because I am comptetive and would love to know where I could improve to win - here is the girl (Elaine) who placed ahead of me: 8 1/2 min faster in the swim, transitions are slower, bike time - the same, and my run was faster. : )

226 1390 70.3 Elaine Debitetto 43 F STOW MA 115 31:33 26:17 2:27 373 2:49:24 19.8 1:48 268 1:43:52 7:56 5:09:01 2/73 F40-44 27/475 F

AND the winner in my age group - who I think raced pro or elite which is why she wasn't on the podium: 9 min faster in the swim, I am faster on the bike and she is almost 2 min faster on the run.

193 1375 70.3 Leslie Myers 40 F BURLINGT VT 94 30:58 25:49 1:47 449 2:51:39 19.6 1:55 147 1:37:59 7:29 5:04:16 1/73 F40-44 22/475 F

So there you have it - I need to swim and bike and run just a little bit more.... to win! I think I will get in the water before Florida and try to squeeze one more tri in before the end of the season. Time to think about how to keep training this distance and the Chicago marathon at the same time - at least I know my run will be there.

I just know that right now I am on a cloud!

THIS PAST WEEKEND EVENT:
Timberman 70.3 Features Competitive Pro Field
TAGS: 2007 ironman70.3 timberman70.3 topstory

The Timberman 70.3 will be happening this Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Ellacoya State Park, Gilford, NH. If weather predictions are correct the athletes can expect partly cloudy skies with a high of 72 degrees, making way for potential record-breaking times. While the packed professional field will be chasing after the $13,500 prize purse, the age group competitors will be vying for one of the 75 qualifying slots to the Ford Ironman World Championships 70.3 in Clearwater this November.

The athletes start their day at 7:00am in one of 12 waves, with the professional athletes heading out first. The 1.2 mile swim takes place in the fresh, clear blue water of Lake Winnipesaukee. Once out of T2, competitors head out on to one of the most spectacular bike rides on the 70.3 cirucuit.
The 56-mile scenic out and back bike course is mostly rolling hills but the athletes will face several challenging climbs ranging from 3% to 9% grade before returning to Ellacoya State Park.

The 13.1 mile run is a scenic, 2-loop course along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. To take their minds off of the rolling hills athletes can just look across the big lake, and see the majestic White Mountains that fill the horizon.

Preliminary RESULTS - from the IRONMAN website --->> CLICK HERE for more information
The Timberman 70.3 got a break today! The weatherman finally saw it right and the athletes experienced some of the best conditions in recent memory. The water temperature was a comfortable 71 degrees, the skies were clear, and the mild 10 mph wind that served as a tail wind coming home on the bike acted as a cooling fan for the 13.1 mile run. Simon Lessing and Desiree Ficker took full advantage of the beautiful day to cross the line in first place, dethroning the 2006 defending champions Bjorn Andersson and Karen Smyers.

MY PRELIMINARY RESULTS:
So after a pretty strong swim (for me) - smooth and thinking about technique and planing in the water, I felt pretty good exiting the 1.2 mi swim. So happy to get on the bike - my strategy for the race was FOCUS on the swim to be smarter and better technique (hopefully to make up for my lack of training), PUSH on the bike (also not much training here, but with the past success and strength of riding, I know I can pull it off) and then to KICK it on the run... my strength and what I have been spending my training time on (because of Boston and next Chicago).

I checked the site, was well prepared with my checklist, and although having a TON of packing because we camped at Gunstock both nights, I felt like I had it all together and was ready. There were 4 slots for my age group, so in the back of my mind the whole race (my competitive nature) - I thought and had this dream... that maybe... I could qualify for the world championship.

I relaxed the whole day before on Saturday with Steve and we drove the bike course and checked out the transition area before checking in my bike. Knowing the bike course was a true plus, so I didn't stress...

Results? Well I was 8th out of the water for the red caps which were the 35-45 girls and then 20 mph avg on the bike for 56 miles (really got me psyched I could pull this off) and then my run was pretty good even though I worried about having exhausted my strength pushing on the bike.

After finishing - my legs were exhausted and my back was pretty done for... Steve was there at the finish for my victory hug and kudos... I was thrilled with my race, I knew inside I had done well.. just not sure how well and if I actually did it.

We went gathered my bike, transition gear and then to the food for some nutrition, after living on GU and fuel on the bike (that bagel in the morning at 5 am was LONG GONE!). After wandering we found where the results were posted and I found my name.
5:15 total time
1:40 1/2 marathon
2:15 on the bike
4th in my division

I qualified! I AM thrilled!

Then when picking up the certificate for the world championship after confirming that YES i qualified, they had me listed as 3rd (must be a pro was mistakedly in my group), and then when announced at the podium, I was 2nd (they delete the elite winners from that group). SO 2nd in my age group and QUALIFYING for the WORLD championships 70.3. I am THRILLED (can you tell?). You should see my face on the podium (GLOWING). : )

More later when the results are posted. And we have a ton of photos - what an amazing weekend!!

4th overall woman at the Greenfield Tri (MA) this weekend!

Greenfield Triathlon - August 5, 2007
International Race distance results

Swim 0.63 miles in the Green River; bike 30.4 miles (4 loops counterclockwise on Leyden Rd., Eunice Williams Drive, Green River Rd., Colrain Rd., back on Nash's Mill Rd.); run 7.2 miles, (one loop counterclockwise on Leyden Rd., Eunice Williams Drive, Green River Rd., Plain Rd., Colrain Rd., back on Nash's Mill Rd).

The swim was in the river and actually a great swim because of the buoy line to follow up and down the shore. The bike was definitely a strong point for me with the hills and the run was tough open with the sun and pavement, but turned out to be my strength because of my training focus on running. I was very very happy with my results. First in age (with 2 of the top 3 placing in the top 3 gave me first) but I was 4th overall female and 50 overall in the race of almost 200 people for this USAT New England Club championship and long standing local race!

Eastman Splash Mash & Dash! RESULTS

It was a great day - good weather, Steve & Schuyler came, dropped me off and went back to get my fuel of choice (Shaklee Performance that I left in the fridge). I felt great in the swim, bike and run... Looks as though my time was very close to last year and placing was around the same too - but I was psyched and happy with my results. : )

4th overall woman
26th overall person out of 170
1st in my age group

USAT championships - PHOTOS

After spending 30 minutes blogging my story about this event the computer crashed or something happened and I lost the post - so in the meantime I thought I should share my results and photos and will write again about this great experience.

Enjoy! It was an amazing experience and I am very happy with my results!

First photo: Steve and I before the start
Second photo: Me on my bike while putting it back together making sure it is just right and ready to ride!
Third photo: Running to the finish line in my Team GU trisuit
Fourth photo - with my bike, medal and Curious George next to our Prius rental car (electric car that was awesome to drive!)

Here is a link to my results!
Please note I am editing this at a later date and noting that the story was never re-written after that PC crash.  Boo hoo.  I will probably need to try and remember and post again ---- until then, the photos show a happy story in itself!  :)

Splash, Mash & Dash 2007

Prepping for Portland the season has started and my first triathlon of the year is upon me. Focusing more on training than racing this year, with Boston, Big Lake & Covered Bridges behind me, now it is time to hit the road and swim! I have been in the pond about 6 times to get some mileage (although not enough) at least there is some under my belt. I haven't gone on many bike rides, but the spin class all winter will be to my benefit. That will be my goal for the remainder of June along with packing up my house, is to get some bike rides in. I love to train and actually feel in top shape going into the season.

SO - here I go - off to Eastman on Saturday of next week. I just entered the race so I thought I would blog about it... Goals - a better swim of course, kick it in on the bike (as always) - hope we don't get rain, which will improve my time and then to feel the burn on the run and push myself competitively to see how that feels in a triathlon. I am one that likes to "hang" and enjoy the scenery... the trail run is a good one and I really do enjoy the people from this race. AND it is sanctioned so it helps my ranking.

Spinner Class Nancy Featured Playlist

Spinner class is held Monday, Wednesday & Friday at the Newport Health Club at 5 AM. Tina and I have been going since the drop in temps and darkness of winter to balance and get training in for the spring cycling and racing season. It has been SO much fun listening to some great music and cranking the gears, dripping sweat, fogging up the mirrors and getting to know the characters in the class - my new friends....

Joe - the spin instructor. Friend and husband of Dawn, dad of Matthew and Jonah. Dawn is in the mom's group and I have known her and Joe for 5 years. Joe competes in triathlons and is a great motivator, coach and well trained in getting us ready for the season. He knows my competitive spirit and plays up on that for the group. He knows I appreciate the PUSH!

Tina - my running buddy, spinning buddy, the Naimie family is the best! Tina is the CFO at our local hospital and incredibly smart. Makes for some great conversation on everything. But she is a TOP TEN friend and just an incredible listener and level headed person. Very supportive. She is very sympathetic and caring. Lily & Nick are the kids and Chris her husband is a competitive Cat 2 cyclist, Xctry coach for Bow High School and in incredible shape...

Rhonda - Neighbor and also in the mom's group. Rhonda is running for library board and passionate about politics right now. She is the neighborhood welcome person.

Aggie - Chiropractor in town (mid 30's?) - mom, good athlete, does a great circuit routine when Joe didn't make it one day. Great person.

Neil - All smiles, hard worker...

Nick - owns the golf course in town, loves to talk golf and when we had our "riders choice class" Nick shared his dream of a CLIMB!

Eric - Big guy, tatoos all over his body, but a real softie inside, I can tell. : )

Kent - Cycle guy, big goals, no history of racing. Interesting.... we shall see. Eric called him "Sally" one day and he never got over it... (funny!).

So that is the class - there are 2 other girls (can't remember their names right now) and they are great too - but we have become a little family in the 3 short months I have been training with them. I love coaching, razzing, motivating and laughing.... so this class really gets me going in the morning. Looking forward to the season to see the result of these early season trainings. Look out Nationals! I am just about ready... Just need to find time to swim.

The image is my playlist for an upcoming class, where they will feature my chosen music. Very cool.
