Mt Wachusett Mountain Race - #2 in USAT NE series

Mt Wachusett Mountain Race - #2 in USAT NE series

Results:
85th overall 11th woman 3rd in age
Time: 41:39 Nancy Cook F 40-49 Belchertown, MA
Club: White Mtn Milers 144pts for the series

3rd in age! Despite this stomach bug, I felt great on the trail and on the road. Almost in the top rank. Less than 1 min behind both girls in my age. Happy with my results!
The time isn't reflective completely because I forgot to turn off my Garmin. :) Oh well. I ran the race in 41:35 -- Not bad for 5 miles in the mountains / trails!

I posted a bunch of photos on facebook and really have been thinking how I am not a great downhiller --- I worry about my knee, my ankle and just crashing hard.  I realize I need to read up on it and train for it.  There have been some really fast girls at these races, women in my age group are running so fast and it is really something to aspire to...   being very proud of my race at Northfield has got me psyched about mountain and trail racing once again.  It is really good with the trails in the backyard that I have my own training ground on a daily basis.  I love this one photo Steve took of me this weekend.  He captures me looking so good - and smiling right at him!  What an amazing support, coach, friend, husband extraordinaire!

This week I ordered some racing flats - the Inov-8 f-lite 230 - from Zappos online shoe store.  Free shipping and the best selection around!  The fast girls are sponsored and racing in these very cool blue shoe --- can't wait for mine to arrive.  At Wachusett I wore my mountain running shoes and it really made a difference.  I won the shoes at one of these races 2 years ago when I did the whole series.

Next weekend is Pack Monadnock.  A good one for me because of the 10 mile distance.  The last mile is so uphill you have to walk - it is faster than running.....  The view is amazing from the top.  Looking forward to it!

Sand Hill Crane - Shutter Love ! Voted number 8 in the TOP TEN!

One of my favorite nature photos taken in Trinity, Florida on a trip to visit Steve's mom.

Beatiful color on the head and just nice positioning the way that the bird is cropped.

UPDATE!!  5/29/10

SO excited!  I just found out that my photo was selected #8 in the top Ten for Shutter Love Tuesdays this week!  Yay!!

NE USAT Trail Running Championships @ Northfield Mtn

NE USAT Trail Running Championships - Garmin Connect - Details
First mountain race of the season
May 22, Saturday
Northfield Mountain , MA

3rd in age
11th woman overall
78th overall - of 264 competitors

First in my age (Suzy West - a past Mtn Goat series winner) beat me by 5 min and the second place girl under a minute ahead of me.  Next time! :)
F40-49 1 44 Suzy West 41:34 f 47 u CSU 77.55 90.26
F40-49 2 66 Karen Encarnacion 44:30 f 44 u SRR 72.43 84.31
F40-49 3 78 Nancy Cook 45:20 f 45 u WMM 71.10 82.76

Great course, good people, great weather --- I love the home town feeling of these mountain races.  You are welcomed like a family member and see lots of familiar faces because not too many runners get into this type of running.  It is definitely not for the feint at heart.  :)

Lots of uphill, trails, rocks, tree limbs and foliage hitting your legs.  Just a few scratches and only one twist in the ankle.  This course has a crazy downhill long finish under the power lines where you almost have to jump every "water bar" headed down the hill, hope your footing is right on not to trip on your own feet!

VERY happy with my results!

Friday Confessional

OK - here goes my attempt #2 at this game....

It is Memorial Day weekend and I am going to try to confess...

  1. Enabling - Schuyler is truly my weakness, he knows how to push my buttons and make me feel guilty and sad at the same time.  We were in Snowbird and he brought me to tears.  How can an 8 year old do that to me?  This morning he was driving me batty because he is so slow....  I beeped the horn at him to get him moving and he started to cry.  "Guilty Mom of the Day".  I am working on not giving in to his whims and teaching him that I am treating him to ice cream and it isn't something that is coming to him once a week....   it goes on...
  2. Guilt - I feel guilt so much from so many different actions of people whether they mean it or not.  Top on the list is my mother, my husband and of course Schuyler.  I need to try not to read into these very important people in my life. I can only do the best that I can....
  3. Jealousy - I am the a very jealous person when it comes to my husband.  Mostly jealous of his past lives without me wishing I were there.  But it isn't a good trait as it backfires and he shows jealousy as well.  Not sure how to fix it except constant LOVE.  :)
  4. Time management - I need more motivation at work -- the day flies by and I get the majority of my stuff done in 4 hours.  Of course I feel guilty that I am not constantly working, but need the focus on particular pieces of work that need completing.  I get it all done, but it isn't easy lately.  Really sad that I found out 70 people were recently laid off from our organization and last spring we had such a big downsizing at the national office, I worry as a remote office person about my job.  But keep on excelling and focusing on making a difference and putting my time where I can best serve those that I work with every day.
  5. Weight - - Food & Wine - This is a problem for me sometimes, trying to look the best I can for my gorgeous husband and of course for my own self esteem.  I confess that I LOVE food and i LOVE wine and I would vary my diet SO much more if I didn't worry about my weight on a daily basis.  I think I can run faster if I am skinnier...   I will look better in a wetsuit if I am skinnier.....  I will look better in marathon photos if I look like a skinny runner....   But honestly I really like the way I look right now.  But I weigh 146 lbs!  That would be humungous in most people's books, my thighs are huge, but I ski ---etc....  oh well ----  got to love me for me!  right?

OK - that is it, it wasn't as funny as  I hoped - maybe I will try the humorous angle next time...

Happy Friday everyone!  TGIF  --- Long weekend ahead!  Yay!
Try this yourself - link up to the Glamazon Mormon mom above and read some other fun posts in the virtual world.  And PLEASE leave a note if you stopped by!   Thanks

One more thing....  I found this other fun linky as it is always great to do a little visiting during downtime and get some writing motivation, check out new blogs and old blog friends too!

Winning Wine Wednesday ! Kendall Jackson Chardonnay

Here it is ---- a concept to share along with all the memes for blogging in the virtual neighborhood --- This is a day to share your favorite wine for the week.  Please comment if you have had this wine, like this wine, hate this wine or have some other wine story to share!  :)

My choice this week:

Acclaim
Double Gold - 2009 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Wine Competition
Highly Recommended - Newsday, November 2009

Wine Statistics
Appellation: California
Composition: 100% Chardonnay
Growing Regions: 61% Monterey County, 33% Santa Barbara County, 5% Mendocino County, 1% Sonoma County
Alcohol: 13.5%
T.A.: 0.69g/100ml
pH: 3.45

How you were introduced?
An all time favorite wine....  to order at restaurants, to get on sale at Liquor 44 and store it by the case.  So refreshing and ALWAYS consistent.  Hence my quote that KJ is the Coca-cola of Chardonnays.  You can buy it anywhere and be satisfied with the taste.  They make a LOT of this wine which make it a great value wine for the price.  We used to be able to get it for 9.99, but the lowest I have seen it lately is 11.99.

Cellar/Tasting Notes
Oakey and citrus make this a nice compliment to any meal, especially seafood and chicken.  Serve as cold as possible in my book --- I love cold chardonnay and have been known to return it if it was not up to my level of coldness. Honestly - the reserve, the grand reserve and the just plain old KJ all taste about the same to me, so enjoy any of them --- you won't be disappointed.

KJ Website Tasting Notes
"This Chardonnay bursts with tropical flavors such as mango, papaya and pineapple with citrus notes that explode in your mouth. These flavors delicately intertwine with aromas of green apple and pear to create depth and balance throughout. A hint of toasted oak rounds out the long lingering finish." – Randy Ullom, Winemaster

Mary Beth Reddell - A Celebration of Life

I am very sad to inform you that we at the American Cancer Society have lost an incredible national volunteer last weekend - - Mary Beth Reddell of Midland, Texas

Mary Beth Reddell was an incredible volunteer leader for American Airlines since they became a Relay For Life National Team Program company 4 years ago. As a cancer survivor her personal quest to build teams at AA was on the road traveling talking to the hubs and dedicating her own efforts in North Tarrant county at her local Relay. She has been to 3 National Relay Summits filling the group with her Relay spirit! Her cancer treatments slowed her down from direct participation at our national event these past couple years, but her on the ground work with AA teams at an all time high of 112 teams! On our national conference calls her sharing of fundraising at AA was always so animated and with such enthusiasm it made everyone want to implement an "Executive Idol" at their own company.

But it was her strength and positve outlook & spirit from her journal on her Care Page that truly motivated me as an athlete to dedicate my 3 marathons this past year raising money through ACS DetermiNation in her honor. She and her mom have supported my efforts with words of strenght & donations and even now after we have lost her on this earth, she continues to raise money for North Tarrant County on her facebook page and donation page for Relay where her goal of $5000 will be made!.

It is because of Heroes like Mary Beth that fuel me to fight cancer and be proud that every day I work for an organization that puts its best foot forward to make progress against this disease so that we can help more people celebrate more birthdays and continue the fight!

I will be working with Kathy Fairbanks on some additional ways we can honor Mary Beth - but please take a moment, say a prayer, and honor an amazing national volunteer leader,

"God saw you were getting tired

And a cure was not to be.

So He put His arms around you

And whispered 'come to me'

A golden heart stopped beating,

Hard working hands now rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us

He only takes the best.“

(shared in MB’s service brochure)

My story is very simple. I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at age 41. I didn't have the trendy cancer - I had an old people disease! IT was in my colon, abdomen, and liver - they said there was no cure and gave me a "pat" on the head dismissing me - as if they assumed I was going to die. That made me very angry - as I thought God was the only one who knew when the time would come for me to go. That was almost 4-1/2 years ago. I've had six major surgeries. Countless chemos and radiation. I've fought it off 4 times and its back again for another round. This time its in my lung and back in the liver. I'm giving it all I have and with the love of my friends and family - I will win the fight. This fight also gave me the chance to connect with the American Cancer Society and I am a Hero of Hope, a spokesperson for ACS and the Relay for Life. Having cancer changed my life, and through my struggles I have been blessed with all of you.

I share my story because I can, and through the circle of life, we all touch each other.

Woo Hoo! MB busted out of the hospital

Posted May 6, 2010 5:12pm

No more chemo, no more drugs, no more pain! No more ugly, over-sized hospital gowns. She traded it all in for a healthy body and beautiful angel wings.

On Sunday, May 2 surrounded by close family and a few friends, Mary Beth completed her task on earth. The void left by her physical passing will be filled by the beautiful, precious memories that she left with all who were blessed to have known her.

Her faith in God, courage, grace, determination, positive attitude, and undying spirit carried her far beyond the original prognosis.

(posted by her mom)

Mary Beth - you are my HERO - I will miss you terribly.  :(

A Grand Tree Summer?

Looking to the summer and setting my calendar to include hopefully 6 of the below Grand Tree Trail Races....  This is a series promoted by the WMAC (Western MA athletic club) and it is a great motivation for me to follow a plan for racing and training - They have a trail marathon that is something I would like to do in the future, and to "qualify" you need to run a 50 miler or 6 of these races.  The series has already had 5 races and so I need to get it in gear to get this into my schedule.  Originally I was going to work toward being a "Mountain Goat" again, but the trips to NH are very long and I really would love to stay close to home and experience new races as well.  So here is the list
BOLD - are those I am truly interested in.  The Mountain Goat race benefits with the new sponsor look pretty cool though.... so we shall see.

Post it Tuesday!

It's Tuesday!  Yippee!  OK - it has been a few weeks since I have posted with the blog carnival, but I am back in the office, not on vacation and not absolutely crazy.  Balancing it all is such a trick!  So here I go again -- with Supah Mommy's Post it Tuesday (she has 1000 followers and this could be due to her creative aspect of social blogging that draws people back week after week).

Use the post it notes link to create your own and then post them to your blog and link up to the long list of followers on Supah's page.  Please comment below if you can to let me know that you have stopped by!
