70.3 World Championship

Staying with my mother in law and Ray in Florida getting ready for the World Championships. The drive was a little crazy, but I got my bike looked at and then everything checked in and racked!

Here are some pics of the transition area - - red for run bag and blue for the blue bag... They have a tent for changing - - I don't need much for changing, but it was cool to see how organized they are here in Clearwater.

Steve flies out tonight and will be here in the morning to watch me race with his mom.... wish me luck!

Words of advice

1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
2. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.
3. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.
4. When you say, "I love you," mean it.
5. When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.
6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.
7. Believe in love at first sight.
8. Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have much.
9. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
10. .In disagreements fight fairly. No name calling.
11. Don't judge people by their relatives.
12. Talk slowly but think quickly.
13. .When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
14. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk..
15. Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.
16. When you lose, don't lose the lesson
17. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and responsibility for all your actions.
18. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
19. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
20. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
21. Spend some time alone.

Message from Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski

Runners,

For 17 years I have been honored to serve as Executive Race Director of The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, a race steeped in a 30-year tradition of providing the ultimate marathon experience for runners.

The record high temperatures and humidity at Sunday’s race made for a challenging day for marathoners. The conditions on Sunday presented me with the single most difficult decision I have ever made as race director. While that was a frustration to many, I stand behind the decision to end the race early– it was a necessary safety measure. However, I also recognize that because of the conditions and my decision, many of our runners did not have the experience they trained for and expected.

As an organization dedicated to providing the very best experience in the industry, the results have left us disappointed as well. Our team has spent the last several days reviewing the details and we are listening to runners, staff and volunteers. Rest assured that we take the day’s events - and your comments - seriously.

We are reviewing all details and feedback as we plan to continue the tradition of our race in 2008 and beyond. Offering the best experience possible to runners always has been our priority and it remains a commitment of the highest importance.

My personal gratitude goes to each of you, as well as to staff and volunteers, for participating in the race this year. I share in your disappointment, if you did not have the experience you expected.

I certainly hope to be able to greet you at our finish line in the years ahead, in the grand fashion that has characterized The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon for so many years.

Sincerely,

Carey Pinkowski
Executive Race Director

I survived the Chicago Marathon! TODAY!!

I started off strong, seeded in the A coral was a bonus and although arriving late and stressing to find my way, made friends with a bunch of people from France... tried to use my high school french with little success... but they were friendly to me at any rate. : ) Steve and I had dinner with John Klika and family (one of my fave collegues from the Midwest Division - and although from a distance, a real encouragement to me in training). After dinner his daughter Lauren was so excited that I was considering a costume.... again... and we searched and seached for a Wonder Woman outfit, only to find this very sexy velour and satin thing... (NOT). So I opted for the tiger ears, bow tie and tail. : ) What a great time in the costume aisle with this sweet 8 year old!

My first half was strong - still on my goal pace of a 3-3:05, thinking back that is probably when I started to feel tired and just worn -- trying to drink more, feeling dehydrated in the 90 degrees with 100% humidity of a day (who knew ... early October in Chicago!). Steve met me in 4 different sections of the course helping me focus and push.... stop that negative talk and kick it in... then at the 21 I was done, really wanted to walk... not feeling well, I had stopped twice to go the bathroom with no luck - just whoozy and then got back on the course, walking at a few water stops... knowing my pace was slowing waiting to be passed by the 3:15 and 3:20 pacers (but never did, so ... i knew EVERYONE was a little off). Thinking of all the excuses why I was so slow... lack of sleep, lack of training...etc. etc. I staggered up the hill and didn't walk the last 5 miles... it hurt! I made it to the corner toward the finish - STARING at that sign I swung my arms and felt like I was sprinting (but wasn't)... and crossed the line at 3;26:13. I staggered through the medal people, the chip people, picked up some warm water and sipped some warm gatorade (nothing was cold in this heat... EXCEPT the BEER! I couldn't help myself, it was the coldest thing there! Yum! I finished half a glass and then through the food area, to the picture people, skipped the thermal blanket and then to the end. Looking for Steve, I met him and we sat in the park for a while - it was tough getting up, down, then walking shopping on Michigan, up and down stairs... pain.. oh well (WAH! I whined a little too much, but feel much better now)> : )

Judy called and gave me my stats! I was so happy to hear - - I was 896 overall (45000 starters), 131 woman, 16 in my division. What a great finish afterall (I can stop whining now and be happy!). Very cool.

We met this other runner on the subway - - everyone's race was off (they said to add 1 min for each mile because of the heat - which was perfect for me with my time by the way...) - and he chatted with us while we waited for the train.

Scorching Chicago Marathon Leaves 1 Dead
Sunday, October 7, 2007; 8:22 PM

CHICAGO -- In a race run in scorching heat that left one man dead, Kenya's Patrick Ivuti won the Chicago Marathon by a fraction of a second Sunday. At least 49 runners were taken to hospitals and another 250 were treated at the site.

About 10,000 of the 45,000 registered runners chose to not race in the heat despite more mist stations, cooling buses and water-soaked sponges, while another 10,934 started but didn't finish, officials said.

On a high point the third place woman was Kate O'Neil from Massachusetts was third woman. It was a tough race, definitely the hottest marathon I have ever run! They say that never before has a major marathon been cancelled. Pretty sad for those that couldn't finish after all the training (first time marathoners and others!)

FYI Last year's stats vs. this year's stats (VERY cool! Feeling pretty good afterall!)

My look alike - neice Paige

My sister Laura sent me these great photos from the fair - Paige showing cows. I like the one in the barn with the girls hangin' out with the girls! Amanda is in that one too! Beautiful photos! Gotta love the quilted cow tie.

Please pray for Hillary

One of my very best friends, Shawn Coltharp's 20 something year old daughter Hillary was in a bad car accident is in critical condition in Vanderbuilt Med Center in Nashville. Pictures from our trip to NYC back in fall of 2005 below. Hilary is Max's mommy (Shawn's grandson who was born the same month as Schuyler and is going to be 6). She is the pictured with the straight hair, the older of the 2 girls and the middle girl of 3. This is a horrible tragedy and every parents nightmare.

This is the HILLARY blog the family is keeping showing her progress. It is amazing the love and support - we are all hoping for a miracle.

Please send your strength and prayers.

Perfecting my margarita concocting skils...

My PERFECT margarita recipe

3 shots tequilla (Cuervo Gold is current TEQUILLA of choice)
2 shots Jose marg mix
1 shot Rose's lime juice
1 1/2 shots Orange (Grand Marnier if it fits the budget)
ice and blend to taste
slice of LIME

(usually needs a little more tequilla - depending on the taster... and my taster loves tequilla)

I have spent many years in the restaurant world dating back to my Killington days in the late 80's to mid nineties.... Then to be labeled the "margarita meister" - i got even the heavy weights singing! Now in my forties, needing to have the perfect taste, not to get the buzz, but the feeling and smoothness of a great drink as the margarita - - this is my recipe above after more than 2 months of testing here in Massachusetts. Do you believe it? I have been here 2 months. Life is good. Drink on and be merry!

Tipping

Taking a day off today - even though I am sitting on the computer right now and blogging, I took my regular morning run after sleeping in, making coffee, having a little family time while Schuyler, Stephen and Samantha are here this week. Later I will post the fun birthday party we had last night!

So I found this posted article in a round about way through Shelley's blog, which is always good for some incredible photography, some love insight (her and Jonathan's wedding site is a must see!), and her links to her friend's blogs - which includes me! So on Stella's site I found this cool tipping article that is also near and dear to my heart having waited tables for more than 15 years and now in the business world, not knowing what the heck to tip! READ ON.....

More Timberman photos!

Commentary:
Cycling focus, eyes forward, pushing, remembering spin class, scraping the ground with the bottom of my shoes, standing up on the hills to push and to stretch my legs and back out, looking at the average speed and the miles rode just to keep it in perspective. Looking to the next pony tail, looking at the age on the calf muscle (do you believe they write your age on your leg - you have to be proud of your age in this sport!)... Bantering with a few riders, just to leave them behind (that felt really good).. even if not far behind me, still they were behind me (feeling a little competitive as usual).

Running focus: One foot in front of the other to start, shake off those biking legs... build up the turnover of my legs to go faster... think about pace, need to go faster, (no watch on this one to keep it together and motivate, that ALWAYS helps - getting my new watch from nike this week!). GET YOUR ASS IN GEAR! GET MOVING! cheers from my true love, my support, and always there (look to the sky for strength from above - he helps too) DIG DEEP - GET STRONG - (NO negative thoughts - keep positive). Even when your feet are screaming and your back has had it, you MUST think of something else. Talk to people, spectators, runners, ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN (ha ha ha ...). Those who know me, know i LOVE to talk. Even when it is a one way conversation, which in this sport is the norm.

Think FINISH LINE - - look at the mile markers tick on by. Can't wait for that ice cream and beer which is promised free at the finish (gotta love that!). Treat yourself to a quick dip in the water, ice cream and beer. : )

Then it is here - turn the corner, kick it in! Sprint to the finish - that is where the mobs are - and you have to love the cheers of the people when you smile and run hard at the finish. Very fun - very cool!

And what a race it was......

Timberman 70.3 - RESULTS are posted!

293 Overall out of 1493 that finished the 70.3 distance

Bib #1332 70.3 Nancy Peck
SWIM: Rank 740 Time: 40:01 Pace (per mile) 33:21
T1: 2:06
BIKE: Rank 452 Time: 2:51:41 19.6mph
T2: 1:50
RUN: Rank: 186 Time: 1:40:00 7:38 min/mile
Overall time: 5:15:36 Division place: 3/73 F40-44 Female rank 37/475

CLICK HERE for the overall results!

And just because I am comptetive and would love to know where I could improve to win - here is the girl (Elaine) who placed ahead of me: 8 1/2 min faster in the swim, transitions are slower, bike time - the same, and my run was faster. : )

226 1390 70.3 Elaine Debitetto 43 F STOW MA 115 31:33 26:17 2:27 373 2:49:24 19.8 1:48 268 1:43:52 7:56 5:09:01 2/73 F40-44 27/475 F

AND the winner in my age group - who I think raced pro or elite which is why she wasn't on the podium: 9 min faster in the swim, I am faster on the bike and she is almost 2 min faster on the run.

193 1375 70.3 Leslie Myers 40 F BURLINGT VT 94 30:58 25:49 1:47 449 2:51:39 19.6 1:55 147 1:37:59 7:29 5:04:16 1/73 F40-44 22/475 F

So there you have it - I need to swim and bike and run just a little bit more.... to win! I think I will get in the water before Florida and try to squeeze one more tri in before the end of the season. Time to think about how to keep training this distance and the Chicago marathon at the same time - at least I know my run will be there.

I just know that right now I am on a cloud!

THIS PAST WEEKEND EVENT:
Timberman 70.3 Features Competitive Pro Field
TAGS: 2007 ironman70.3 timberman70.3 topstory

The Timberman 70.3 will be happening this Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Ellacoya State Park, Gilford, NH. If weather predictions are correct the athletes can expect partly cloudy skies with a high of 72 degrees, making way for potential record-breaking times. While the packed professional field will be chasing after the $13,500 prize purse, the age group competitors will be vying for one of the 75 qualifying slots to the Ford Ironman World Championships 70.3 in Clearwater this November.

The athletes start their day at 7:00am in one of 12 waves, with the professional athletes heading out first. The 1.2 mile swim takes place in the fresh, clear blue water of Lake Winnipesaukee. Once out of T2, competitors head out on to one of the most spectacular bike rides on the 70.3 cirucuit.
The 56-mile scenic out and back bike course is mostly rolling hills but the athletes will face several challenging climbs ranging from 3% to 9% grade before returning to Ellacoya State Park.

The 13.1 mile run is a scenic, 2-loop course along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. To take their minds off of the rolling hills athletes can just look across the big lake, and see the majestic White Mountains that fill the horizon.

Preliminary RESULTS - from the IRONMAN website --->> CLICK HERE for more information
The Timberman 70.3 got a break today! The weatherman finally saw it right and the athletes experienced some of the best conditions in recent memory. The water temperature was a comfortable 71 degrees, the skies were clear, and the mild 10 mph wind that served as a tail wind coming home on the bike acted as a cooling fan for the 13.1 mile run. Simon Lessing and Desiree Ficker took full advantage of the beautiful day to cross the line in first place, dethroning the 2006 defending champions Bjorn Andersson and Karen Smyers.

MY PRELIMINARY RESULTS:
So after a pretty strong swim (for me) - smooth and thinking about technique and planing in the water, I felt pretty good exiting the 1.2 mi swim. So happy to get on the bike - my strategy for the race was FOCUS on the swim to be smarter and better technique (hopefully to make up for my lack of training), PUSH on the bike (also not much training here, but with the past success and strength of riding, I know I can pull it off) and then to KICK it on the run... my strength and what I have been spending my training time on (because of Boston and next Chicago).

I checked the site, was well prepared with my checklist, and although having a TON of packing because we camped at Gunstock both nights, I felt like I had it all together and was ready. There were 4 slots for my age group, so in the back of my mind the whole race (my competitive nature) - I thought and had this dream... that maybe... I could qualify for the world championship.

I relaxed the whole day before on Saturday with Steve and we drove the bike course and checked out the transition area before checking in my bike. Knowing the bike course was a true plus, so I didn't stress...

Results? Well I was 8th out of the water for the red caps which were the 35-45 girls and then 20 mph avg on the bike for 56 miles (really got me psyched I could pull this off) and then my run was pretty good even though I worried about having exhausted my strength pushing on the bike.

After finishing - my legs were exhausted and my back was pretty done for... Steve was there at the finish for my victory hug and kudos... I was thrilled with my race, I knew inside I had done well.. just not sure how well and if I actually did it.

We went gathered my bike, transition gear and then to the food for some nutrition, after living on GU and fuel on the bike (that bagel in the morning at 5 am was LONG GONE!). After wandering we found where the results were posted and I found my name.
5:15 total time
1:40 1/2 marathon
2:15 on the bike
4th in my division

I qualified! I AM thrilled!

Then when picking up the certificate for the world championship after confirming that YES i qualified, they had me listed as 3rd (must be a pro was mistakedly in my group), and then when announced at the podium, I was 2nd (they delete the elite winners from that group). SO 2nd in my age group and QUALIFYING for the WORLD championships 70.3. I am THRILLED (can you tell?). You should see my face on the podium (GLOWING). : )

More later when the results are posted. And we have a ton of photos - what an amazing weekend!!
