A LITTLE BACKGROUND:
World Triathlon Corporation announces the Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3, an event supported by a new global series of Ironman 70.3 events. All Ironman 70.3 events will culminate at the Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3 event in Florida scheduled for November 11, 2006.

“The Ironman 70.3 name will distinguish our events both in name and in quality. We believe the new series will energize the competitive spirit and fully recognize the distance accomplished by our athletes,” says Steve Meckfessel, Ironman 70.3 events director.

Timberman 70.3 Features Competitive Pro Field
TAGS: 2007 ironman70.3 timberman70.3 topstory

The Timberman 70.3 will be happening this Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Ellacoya State Park, Gilford, NH. If weather predictions are correct the athletes can expect partly cloudy skies with a high of 72 degrees, making way for potential record-breaking times. While the packed professional field will be chasing after the $13,500 prize purse, the age group competitors will be vying for one of the 75 qualifying slots to the Ford Ironman World Championships 70.3 in Clearwater this November.

The athletes start their day at 7:00am in one of 12 waves, with the professional athletes heading out first. The 1.2 mile swim takes place in the fresh, clear blue water of Lake Winnipesaukee. Once out of T2, competitors head out on to one of the most spectacular bike rides on the 70.3 cirucuit.
The 56-mile scenic out and back bike course is mostly rolling hills but the athletes will face several challenging climbs ranging from 3% to 9% grade before returning to Ellacoya State Park.

The 13.1 mile run is a scenic, 2-loop course along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. To take their minds off of the rolling hills athletes can just look across the big lake, and see the majestic White Mountains that fill the horizon.

Preliminary RESULTS - from the IRONMAN website --->> CLICK HERE for more information
The Timberman 70.3 got a break today! The weatherman finally saw it right and the athletes experienced some of the best conditions in recent memory. The water temperature was a comfortable 71 degrees, the skies were clear, and the mild 10 mph wind that served as a tail wind coming home on the bike acted as a cooling fan for the 13.1 mile run. Simon Lessing and Desiree Ficker took full advantage of the beautiful day to cross the line in first place, dethroning the 2006 defending champions Bjorn Andersson and Karen Smyers.

MY PRELIMINARY RESULTS:
So after a pretty strong swim (for me) - smooth and thinking about technique and planing in the water, I felt pretty good exiting the 1.2 mi swim. So happy to get on the bike - my strategy for the race was FOCUS on the swim to be smarter and better technique (hopefully to make up for my lack of training), PUSH on the bike (also not much training here, but with the past success and strength of riding, I know I can pull it off) and then to KICK it on the run... my strength and what I have been spending my training time on (because of Boston and next Chicago).

I checked the site, was well prepared with my checklist, and although having a TON of packing because we camped at Gunstock both nights, I felt like I had it all together and was ready. There were 4 slots for my age group, so in the back of my mind the whole race (my competitive nature) - I thought and had this dream... that maybe... I could qualify for the world championship.

I relaxed the whole day before on Saturday with Steve and we drove the bike course and checked out the transition area before checking in my bike. Knowing the bike course was a true plus, so I didn't stress...

Results? Well I was 8th out of the water for the red caps which were the 35-45 girls and then 20 mph avg on the bike for 56 miles (really got me psyched I could pull this off) and then my run was pretty good even though I worried about having exhausted my strength pushing on the bike.

After finishing - my legs were exhausted and my back was pretty done for... Steve was there at the finish for my victory hug and kudos... I was thrilled with my race, I knew inside I had done well.. just not sure how well and if I actually did it.

We went gathered my bike, transition gear and then to the food for some nutrition, after living on GU and fuel on the bike (that bagel in the morning at 5 am was LONG GONE!). After wandering we found where the results were posted and I found my name.
5:15 total time
1:40 1/2 marathon
2:15 on the bike
4th in my division

I qualified! I AM thrilled!

Then when picking up the certificate for the world championship after confirming that YES i qualified, they had me listed as 3rd (must be a pro was mistakedly in my group), and then when announced at the podium, I was 2nd (they delete the elite winners from that group). SO 2nd in my age group and QUALIFYING for the WORLD championships 70.3. I am THRILLED (can you tell?). You should see my face on the podium (GLOWING). : )

More later when the results are posted. And we have a ton of photos - what an amazing weekend!!

Lost & Found - some Big Lake 1/2 marathon photos

In redeeming my race results with Team GU - I searched high and low for my race photos to send via email. Still missing pics from the Eastman Tri - so need to find out who took photos there! : )

Here are the pics from Big Lake, which is very appropriate knowing I am returning to that area this weekend with my new family and friends (although Schuyler is with his dad- he will be sorely missed!).

Timberman 70.3 - this weekend!

CLICK HERE for the news and happenings for the upcoming 70.3 triathlon I am competing in this weekend!

We are camping at Gunstock Mountain after finding there was no room at the inn! : ) No seriously, I called and found some expensive places to stay and decided that with the tent and the air mattress, and enough room for the boat and the BIG ford truck we are golden! Plus it is right near the start and all the fun. We leave on Friday and home after the race on Sunday. Planning on waterskiing Saturday and hope that Terry, Tange, Carson, Turner and Kiara will join us!

Relay Summit in Dallas

My favorite photos of the week - I was in Dallas with the NCTP volunteers and staff relationship managers and just had a good time with them and all the volunteers and staff I know and love. It was like going back to summer camp (just with a lot more stress!)

4. Donna from dressbarn with me as she was on her way to catch her flight home
5. Charlie & Sue Ann in the crowd at the closing ceremony

4th overall woman at the Greenfield Tri (MA) this weekend!

Greenfield Triathlon - August 5, 2007
International Race distance results

Swim 0.63 miles in the Green River; bike 30.4 miles (4 loops counterclockwise on Leyden Rd., Eunice Williams Drive, Green River Rd., Colrain Rd., back on Nash's Mill Rd.); run 7.2 miles, (one loop counterclockwise on Leyden Rd., Eunice Williams Drive, Green River Rd., Plain Rd., Colrain Rd., back on Nash's Mill Rd).

The swim was in the river and actually a great swim because of the buoy line to follow up and down the shore. The bike was definitely a strong point for me with the hills and the run was tough open with the sun and pavement, but turned out to be my strength because of my training focus on running. I was very very happy with my results. First in age (with 2 of the top 3 placing in the top 3 gave me first) but I was 4th overall female and 50 overall in the race of almost 200 people for this USAT New England Club championship and long standing local race!

Always Remember

I found this really wonderful poem on Relayforlife.org from Bobby Cherry. Not really meeting my needs as a poem for my leaders, but still I thought it was worth saving and sharing. See below.

Your presence is a present to the world.
You are unique and one of a kind.
Your life can be what you want it to be.
Take the days just one at a time.
Count your blessings, not your troubles.
You will make it through whatever comes along.
Within you are so many answers.
Understand, have courage, be strong.
Do not put limits on yourself.
So many dreams are waiting to be realized.
Decisions are too important to leave to chance.
Reach for your peak, your goal and your prize.
Nothing wastes more energy than worrying.
The longer one carries a problem the heavier it gets.
Do not take things too seriously.
Live a life of serenity, not a life of regrets.
Remember that a little love goes a long way.
Remember that a lot … goes forever.
Remember that friendship is a wise investment.
Life’s treasures are people together.
Realize that it is never too late.
Do ordinary things in an extraordinary way.
Have hearth and hope and happiness.
Take the time to wish upon a star…

Eastman Splash Mash & Dash! RESULTS

It was a great day - good weather, Steve & Schuyler came, dropped me off and went back to get my fuel of choice (Shaklee Performance that I left in the fridge). I felt great in the swim, bike and run... Looks as though my time was very close to last year and placing was around the same too - but I was psyched and happy with my results. : )

2006 Ranking for Northeast! #22

As I was looking to register for the Westchester Tri - (hope to qualify for Alcatraz) - found out it is sold out. BUMMER! So - - I went to USAT to find another race that I could schedule. Also Reach to the Beach is sold out (need to tell Tina and the girls - unless we join a team already in place we won't be doing that one this year either).

God's way of telling me to focus more on certain races, I suppose...

But as I looked I found a Northeast section of USAT that had rankings. So here is the list of girls before me and me at #22 for my age group in the Northeast!! Very cool! FYI - AA is for All American and HM is honorable mention All American. : )

My favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Posting this recipe so never to lose it and be able to find it quickly when in need! Schuyler LOVES Mommy's Chocolate Chip Cookies - "the best cookies in the WHOLE world" and I quote (my son - no bias there). I love to make banana bread, cinamon rolls & chocolate chip cookies & blueberry muffins! YUMMY!!

Found on my favorite recipe link site ---- www.kingarthurflour.com for King Arthur Flour (the best recipes in the WORLD!

Chewy

Well, we're still looking for the ULTIMATE chewy chocolate chip cookie -- but this one is a worthy contender. We feel that, with a bit shorter baking time, these might become even chewier. A normal-thickness (3/8-inch) cookie, these have a smooth surface, and brown evenly. Our taste-testers' comments: "Great combo of crisp edge and chewy center." "Very good, why did the chips spread out so much?" Answer: If you use our bittersweet chips, or other "atypical" baking chips, they may not contain as much lecithin, which is the natural ingredient in "standard" chocolate chips that keeps them from melting at baking temperature.

1 cup (2 sticks, 8 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/4 cup (1 3/4 ounces) granulated sugar
1 1/4 cups (8 3/4 ounces) brown sugar, fairly firmly packed, light or dark
1 large egg
1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons (1 ounce) whole milk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 1/4 cups (9 1/2 ounces) unbleached bread flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups (12 ounces) chocolate chips

Melt the butter in a microwave, or in a saucepan set over low heat. (Obviously, the butter doesn't have to be at room temperature for this one.) Mix the melted butter with the sugars, and proceed with the recipe as directed in Kiera's Standby cookies, adding the milk to the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla. Bake the cookies in a preheated 375°F oven for 13 to 15 minutes, till they're an even light brown.Yield: about 18 cookies, 4 to 4 1/4 inches in diameter.

USAT championships - PHOTOS

After spending 30 minutes blogging my story about this event the computer crashed or something happened and I lost the post - so in the meantime I thought I should share my results and photos and will write again about this great experience.

Enjoy! It was an amazing experience and I am very happy with my results!

First photo: Steve and I before the start
Second photo: Me on my bike while putting it back together making sure it is just right and ready to ride!
Third photo: Running to the finish line in my Team GU trisuit
Fourth photo - with my bike, medal and Curious George next to our Prius rental car (electric car that was awesome to drive!)

Here is a link to my results!
Please note I am editing this at a later date and noting that the story was never re-written after that PC crash.  Boo hoo.  I will probably need to try and remember and post again ---- until then, the photos show a happy story in itself!  :)

Waterskiing!

Skiing in the rain - the mist, getting in as many days as possible before leaving my home on the pond. Here are some fave shots of the other morning skiing with Gary. Jerry slept in and Paul drove the boat.

I LOVE THIS SPORT!

Gary put on my back binding and I skied it for the first time with both feet "locked" in - it was amazing the feel, the difference and really getting the ski on edge. I leaned so far into the turn I spun around, did a 360 and CRASHED! Smiling the whole way, I got up and skied another lap and a half .... Such a great way to start the day.

The above photos are of Gary skiing on Perkins Pond. He really has done a lot to support me and give me feedback on my waterskiing. He is a great skier and really is passionate about the sport. I will miss my morning ski - but plan to come back to visit and ski as much as I can.

Resume Building

Saw this article on Monster and thought it was a great one to share for future reference. I have shortened it and included the link because there is a lot of good advice and continued support links on the site. CLICK HERE to view the whole article and additional links.

Writing a resume is like exercising: You may not look forward to it, but you feel better once it’s done. And like the results of a good workout, a well-presented resume can help you keep your career in shape.

Title and Objective
Enough with the stupid titles we dismiss and make fun of. This is your career we're talking about.”
And an objective must get an employer’s attention quickly or it won’t get any attention at all. Your resume must grab my attention within the first few words of the objective. It must be clearly written and relevant to the position you are applying for. Take a little extra time and customize the objective to the position you are seeking…. If you cannot sell yourself with your resume, you might not have the opportunity to sell yourself at an interview”

Look and Feel
For the hard copy of your resume, make sure you invest in good paper stock, says one HR professional who has also composed and drafted resumes for professional clients. “Before our prospective employer even takes one glance at our resume, there is something they do first, and that is FEEL it,” she says. You can double the effect if you choose good-quality paper in a professional color other than white.”

Length
When President Lincoln was asked how long a man’s legs should be, he said they should be able to reach from a man’s body to the floor. Likewise, your resume should be long enough to sell you properly without overstating your accomplishments.

Style and Grammar
Trust me: I won't give a second thought to deleting a resume and/or cover letter that is fraught with mistakes.”

Resumes normally get less than a 15-second glance at the first screening. If someone has asked you to review his resume and you want to help him ensure it gets read -- or want to know if your own is up to par -- be sure you can answer yes to the following questions:

First Impression
Does the resume look original and not based on a template?
Is the resume inviting to read, with clear sections and ample white space?
Does the design look professional rather than like a simple typing job?
Is a qualifications summary included so the reader immediately knows the applicant's value proposition?
Is the length and overall appearance of the resume appropriate given the career level and objective?

Appearance
Does the resume provide a visually pleasing, polished presentation?
Is the font appropriate for the career level and industry?
Are there design elements such as bullets, bolding and lines to guide readers' eyes through the document and highlight important content?
Is there a good balance between text and white space?
Are margins even on all sides?
Are design elements like spacing and font size used consistently throughout the document?
If the resume is longer than a page, does the second page contain a heading? Is the page break formatted correctly?

Resume Sections
Are all resume sections clearly labeled?
Are sections placed in the best order to highlight the applicant's strongest credentials?
Is the work history listed in reverse chronological order (most recent job first)?

Career Goal
Is the career objective included toward the top of the resume in a headline, objective or qualifications summary?
Is the resume targeted to a specific career goal and not trying to be a one-size-fits-all document?
If this is a resume for career change, is the current objective clearly stated, along with supporting details showing how past experience is relevant to the new goal?

Accomplishments
Does the resume include a solid listing of career accomplishments?
Are accomplishments quantified by using numbers, percentages, dollar amounts or other concrete measures of success?
Do accomplishment statements begin with strong, varied action verbs?
Are accomplishments separated from responsibilities?

Relevance
Is the information relevant to hiring managers' needs?
Does the resume's content support the career goal?
Is the resume keyword-rich, packed with appropriate buzzwords and industry acronyms?
Is applicable additional information, such as awards and affiliations, included, while personal information like marital status, age and nationality unrelated to the job target omitted?

Writing Style
Is the resume written in an implied first-person voice with personal pronouns, such as I, me and my, avoided?
Is the content flow logical and easy to understand?
Is the resume as perfect as possible, with no careless typos or spelling, grammar or syntax errors?

Splash, Mash & Dash 2007

Prepping for Portland the season has started and my first triathlon of the year is upon me. Focusing more on training than racing this year, with Boston, Big Lake & Covered Bridges behind me, now it is time to hit the road and swim! I have been in the pond about 6 times to get some mileage (although not enough) at least there is some under my belt. I haven't gone on many bike rides, but the spin class all winter will be to my benefit. That will be my goal for the remainder of June along with packing up my house, is to get some bike rides in. I love to train and actually feel in top shape going into the season.

SO - here I go - off to Eastman on Saturday of next week. I just entered the race so I thought I would blog about it... Goals - a better swim of course, kick it in on the bike (as always) - hope we don't get rain, which will improve my time and then to feel the burn on the run and push myself competitively to see how that feels in a triathlon. I am one that likes to "hang" and enjoy the scenery... the trail run is a good one and I really do enjoy the people from this race. AND it is sanctioned so it helps my ranking.

Time to say "goodbye"

I have been saving these old straight skis since I worked as a patroller in Killington back in the early 90's. I love the yellow Salomon's and dragged this entire crew of skis out west and back home again.... Lots of great turns, lots of great memories skiing many runs at the K as I grew my skills and strength in skiing - "anywhere - - anytime." And that beautiful TUA tele ski was my fave, just perfect for those backcountry treks down to Wheelerville Road and toward Shrewsbury off the back of killington. It is always tough to say goodbye, but it is time....

Good to documnent and scrapbook in my blog to forever be engrained.
